Overview: The Old Silk Route or Silk Road which passes through East Sikkim is a part of the ancient network of trade routes which connected China to India. This route passed through Lhasa and Nathu La and Jelep La Pass and finally reached the port of Tamralipta (present Tamluk in West Bengal) from where it took to the sea and reached Far East. Most of the route is now restricted area due its international boundary with China (Tibet) and the route is controlled by the Indian Army named as – “Cloud Warriors”. The Old Silk Route has become popular as a tourist destination in recent times. There are some fabulous places in this region which all walks of tourists or call those travelers can enjoy in this part of Sikkim. It has a mix of tourist and offbeat places of Sikkim.
Sillery Gaon: Sillery Gaon is a pictorial hamlet in Kalimpong district of West Bengal, located at an altitude of 6,000 ft and 23 km distance from Kalimpong. The place is also known ‘New Darjeeling’ far away from the din and bustle of the city, Sillery is a place synonymous to peace, calm and serenity. This village is the haven of varieties of bird species, which makes it an ideal place for birding among bird watchers. The chirping of the birds and music of the silence will refresh your mind. A major attraction of tourist visiting Sillery Gaon is view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga, the Ramitey view point, the Tinchuley View point as well as the Damsang Fort.
Rishikhola: Reshikhola is a small quaint riverside village, located at the border of Sikkim and West Bengal in Kalimpong, situated on the bank of the river Reshi at an altitude of 2,000ft. Reshikhola got its name from river Reshi. In the nepali language, “Khola” means River. The place is surrounded by lush green forests and mountains which are home to numerous birds and occasional bigger visitors like bears. Rishikhola is a birding paradise for all the passionate bird watchers. Tourists can enjoy the luxury of bathing and fishing in the crystal clear Reshi River while relishing in the beauty of their surroundings. There are many activities in Rishikhola which the visitors can par take in like camping, short forest trek, rock climbing, angling and many more while visiting Rishikhola. Camping along the bank of roaring river Reshi while listening to the soothing sound of exotic Himalayan birds and engulfing in the fresh cool breeze at Rishikhola is an ideal way to admire the wonders of nature. Rishikhola, the calm and quiet place is an ideal destination to revitalize tired souls and get a break from the tedious city life while relishing the beauty of pristine nature.
Rolep: Rolep is a tiny picturesque virgin mountain village of East Sikkim around 20 kms from Rongli on the way to Old Silk Route. Rolep is tucked on the slopes of the rolling green Himalayan foothills with panoramic views of the Rangpo Khola River valley. While in Rolep, tourists can hike along the hanging bridges (Rangkey Bridge) over gushing rivers, get drenched under the 40-feet high waterfall, named Buddha Waterfalls on Shokhey Khola River. Tourists can take village walks and get closer to learning the skills of living in harmony with nature and try bird watching in the forests. Tourist can enjoy calmness and untouched nature with old cave, rich variety of birds, hilly river and fresh air. One can take a trek to the Buddha Cave, which is a local pilgrimage site and also visit the dried valley of Chochen Natural Lake and pray at the Dekiling Monastery. If you are really fond of local culture, then few home stays in Rolep can also organize a traditional ‘Lepcha Hot Stone Bath’ for you in the river valley.
Zuluk: Zuluk, a tiny village in East Sikkim, part of Old Silk Route 10,000 ft. above the sea level gaining popularity amongst the tourists because of its natural virginity, unspoiled nature and amazing Himalayan beauty. This small village accommodates a population of around 700 people. There is also an Indian Army base at Zuluk, which has been used as a transit camp for the army movement to the Chinese border, a few kms away. Zuluk itself does not offer views of the snow peaks but only 14 kms away the Thambi View Point (11,200 feet) offers a panoramic view of the entire Mt. Kanchenjungha range. Watching the sunrise over Mt. Kanchenjungha and its allied peaks from Thambi View Point is amazing to see. The glittering rays of the rising sun kisses the snow clad peak of Mt. Kanchenjungha, which slowly turns crimson and then golden and finally silver. The spectacle is truly breathtaking. The road through Zuluk makes almost 32 hairpin turns to reach Lungthung, which makes it a unique engineering feat. There is a local Nag Temple here. The temple has a cave like structure and the deity of King Cobra or Nag, famous Hindu mythical god is worshipped in the temple. While staying at Zuluk you can cover Padamchen, Lungthung, Nathang, Kupup Lake, Tukla Valley and all other spots in the Silk Route circuit in day trips.
Nathang Valley: On earth there is no heaven but pieces of it. Nathang Valley is popularly called the “Ladakh of the East India”. Situated at the height of 13,000 ft. above the sea level Nathang Valley is one of the most beautiful places in Old Silk Route. It is surrounded by snow-capped hills and mountain landscape. Nathang Valley appears in different colours in different times of the year. In autumn it looks golden when the grass dries up, in rainy season it’s covered in flowers and in winter it is buried in 5 feet of snow. Mt. Kanchenjunga seems to be a stone throwing distance from Nathang Valley. Viewing majestic beauty of Eastern Himalaya during sunrise from Nathang Valley is a life-long memorable experience. Chinese watch towers are clearly visible from Nathang Valley in naked eyes. There is a small Buddhist monastery, a Hindu temple and a small bridge over a small stream in the distance dotting the valley. There is also a war memorial in Nathang Valley carrying the memories of ‘Tukla War’. Nathan falls in the middle of the Silk Route circuit and is the most scenic place to stay. Just 5 kms away, tourists would find the famous Eagle’s Nest Bunker from where you can get a 360 degree view of the whole range of Mt. Kanchenjungha, West Bhutan, plains of Bengal, China, Tibet and the beautiful River Bramhaputra meandering across in the horizon. Another nearby sunrise point Lungthung village is just 20 mins away from Nathang Valley. staying at Nathang tourists can cover Phadamchen, Genmochen, Thambi View Point, Kupup Lake, Tukla Valley, Old Baba Mandir and all other spots in the Silk Route circuit in day trips. Itinerary: 5N / 6D Package
Day 1: Drive from NJP or Bagdogra Airport to Sillery Gaon by Car (91 Km/ 5 hrs).
Once you reach the NJP or Bagdogra Airport our representative will receive you with a warm smile. We will drive you to Sillery Gaon (6,000 ft). Check in at the hotel or homestay. After lunch walk to Damsang, an ancient fort. Stay overnight at Sillery Gaon.
Day 2: Drive from Sillery Gaon to Mankhim by Car (41 Km/ 3 hrs).
After Breakfast drive to Mankhim. The distance from Sillery Gaon to Mankhim is 41 km, which will take 3 hours to reach. Check in at the homestay after reaching Mankhim. Walk around the Aritar Lake, Aritar Monastery and Rai Temple after lunch. Enjoy the stunning sun set view from Mankhim Top in the afternoon. Stay overnight at Mankhim.
Day 3: Drive from Mankhim to Rolep by Car (30 Km/ 2 hrs).
Good morning Mankhim ! Wake up with a sun kiss and it will be amazed to see the morning stunning view of snow covered peaks of Mt. Kanchenjungha. After breakfast drive to Rolep. After lunch you can explore Rolep. Stay overnight at Rolep.
Day 4: Drive Rolep to Nathang Valley via Zuluk by Car (90 Km/ 10 hrs).
Early morning sunrise trip to Thambi View point and continue sightseeing at Zuluk, Zig Zag road, Lungthung and reach Nathang. After lunch, we will start to go towards Elephant Lake, Old Baba Mandir and back in Nathang. A few minutes will be waiting to enjoy sunset over Mt. Kanchenjungha and its allied peaks from Nathang View Point is amazing to see. Stay overnight at Nathang Valley.
Day 5: Drive from Nathang Valley via Zuluk to Rishi Khola by Car (72 Km/ 4 hrs).
Early morning sunrise trip to Thambi View point and drive for Rishi Khola after breakfast in Zuluk. Reaching Rishi and after check in hotel, take a dip in the Reshi River. Enjoy Bonfire in the evening Stay overnight at Rishi.
Day 6: Drive from Rishi Khola to NJP by Car (105 km/ 5 hrs)
Today is the last day of our trip. After breakfast drive to NJP by Car and end our trip.
